Fundraising in Florida - and other top fundraising states
Within the next two weeks, four of the five most populous states in the country will hold their presidential primaries. Florida is the first of the Big 5, with a January 29 primary date. California, Illinois, and New York are but three of the 22 states holding contests on February 5. Texas is the last of the top states, with a March 4 date for its decision.
In preparation for these elections, the candidates have been fundraising frantically in the Big 5. Let’s see how they are doing:
- Floridians have donated a total of over $19 million to various candidates, with Hillary Clinton the apparent favorite. The $4.7 million dollars she has raised in Florida easily outpaces Giuliani’s $3.4 million. Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are tied for third, each with about $2.8 million.
- In California, which has donated a whopping $51 million in total, Clinton again comes away the winner. She has raised $13.1 million in California, but Obama is on her heels with $12.1 million. With only $6.6 million, Giuliani is a distant third.
- New York’s donation total of $49.2 million is right behind California’s, and again Clinton is the clear favorite. Her $18 million doubles Giuliani’s $9 million, with Obama about a million behind him.
- With only $16.8 million in total donations, Illinois has contributed the least of the Big 5. The story is slightly different here - with $9.2 million raised here, Obama has the fundraising lead in his home state. Clinton trails far behind, with $2.8 million. Mitt Romney’s $950,000 places him in third.
- Texas is the only one of the Big 5 with a Republican at the head of the fundraising pack. Of the $21.1 million raised in Texas, $4.7 has gone to Giuliani. Interestingly, Clinton’s $3.1 million and Edwards’ $2.5 million place them in second and third, respectively.
Only two other states have given more than $10 million so far this campaign season. They are Massachusetts ($11.8 million) and New Jersey ($11.7 million). Mitt Romney’s $3.6 million puts him in the lead in MA, as does Clinton’s $3.5 million in NJ.
Of course, raising the most money in a state doesn’t guarantee electoral victory, but it’s nice to know that if you need money, somebody in FL, CA, NY, IL, or TX will probably be happy to help.
