Microsoft, in partnership with Rock the Vote, announced this morning that Xbox 360 owners will be able to “register to vote, participate in presidential polls and voice their opinions to the presidential candidates.” It will all go through Xbox LIVE. The fun starts Monday, August 25, the first day of the Democratic National Convention.
While we’re a Wii household here, I think that this is a great idea. There is a huge demographic that is most easily reached through their video game systems — and I hope that Rock the Vote approaches Sony (the makers of the PS3) and Nintendo (the makers of the Wii) with the same idea.
The real question, though, is when they’ll bring the rest of the voting experience to a video game system near you.

Sadly, we can confirm today that Ohio Representative, Stephanie Tubbs Jones, passed away yesterday, a little after 6pm (EST); Representative Tubbs Jones had suffered a brain aneurysm Tuesday.
She was serving her 5th term in Congress as the Representative from Ohio’s 11th Congressional District (in the Cleveland area). She had served as the Chair of the House Ethics Committee, and was a very vocal member of the House Ways and Means Committee.
The Congresswoman was a staunch supporter of Hillary Clinton’s Presidential campaign, but she publicly endorsed Senator Barack Obama following the spring primaries.

As far as third party nominees go, it’s pretty clear that Bob Barr is in the lead. He’s getting national name recognition, but — despite taking the matter to the courts — he’s been excluded from events such as last weekend’s Saddleback Civil Forum.
Do you think he should be included, or should he be excluded?
Vote in the poll we have in our side bar!

Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones suffered a brain aneurysm yesterday. Sources reported to the Plain Dealer that Tubbs Jones was removed from life support at 12:19 p.m, but CNN reports that, while earlier reports said that she had died, she was still alive with limited brain function, according to the chief of staff at Huron Hospital.
Tubbs Jones is the first African-American woman to represent Ohio in Congress. She is also a superdelegate and was scheduled to attend the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

According to the poll we had running in the side bar, all of you think that electronic voting is an improvement over paper ballots.
To be honest, I’m kind of surprised. Yes, I think that electronic voting is a major improvement over counting ballots by hand — or even having to run them through an optical scanner. But I know that plenty of people are worried about the various problems that seem to come along with electronic voting.
So, voters, an additional question: Why do you think electronic voting is an improvement over paper balloting?

Barack Obama has chosen his running mate…reportedly.
According to the NY Times, Barack Obama could announce his choice as early as Wednesday morning - however, he has not yet informed the chosen one.
The final 3 contenders are (seem to be) Joe Biden (DE), Evan Bayh (IN) and Tim Kaine (VA).
The Democratic Convention begins Monday, August 25th.
AND, John McCain has, again, reportedly, set the date for his VP Announcement - August 29th (coincidentally, McCain’s birthday, and the day after the DNC ends), in Ohio.
The Republican Convention (in Minneapolis, MN) begins Monday, September 1st.
Who do you think is Obama’s choice? Who would you have had him choose?
And who should McCain choose as Vice President?

The July totals for fundraising are now in. John McCain reported raising $27 million over the course of the month. Barack Obama raised more than $51 million.
The fundraising totals for the RNC and DNC are a lot more even, though: $26 million and $27.7 million respectively.
Obama also managed to pass 2 million donors last month.

Bob Barr’s name will be on the ballot in all fifty states, come November. To say that Barr is a viable third party candidate is putting the situation mildly.
Ralph Nader was accused of ’spoiling’ John Kerry’s run for president in 2004. Nader was only on the ballot in 34 states.
I won’t argue that Barr has come near to either Barack Obama or John McCain’s numbers. But I think that his candidacy is already having a significant affect on this presidential campaign. The margin between Obama and McCain remains narrow enough that both candidates have to seriously consider the chance that Barr might have a Nader effect.
Conservatives who feel that McCain is too moderate like Barr — his voting record during his tenure as the representative from Georgia’s 7th congressional district makes that clear. He’s undergone something of a transformation to become the Libertarian Presidential candidate, but many of his actual stances remain the same. The real change is that Barr has come to the conclusion that issues like same-sex marriages should be a decision made at the state level, rather than the federal.
But because Barr believes that marriage is not a federal issue, quite a few Democrats feel comfortable with him as a candidate. There are more than a few Democrats who haven’t committed to Obama, from reasons as varied as his defeat of Clinton and his relative youth. I have a feeling that Barr could pick up a few of those votes as well.
The way that Barr is running his campaign is also worth a look. Obama has gotten a lot of praise for his use of social media, but Barr has committed himself to making connections through sites beyond the usual suspects (Facebook, MySpace, etc.). Despite having less ‘real world’ name recognition, Barr has hundreds of online friends even on Digg.
This race is close enough that I’m willing to bet that Obama and McCain’s staffs are keeping tabs on Barr, and I think the rest of us should do the same.
Thanks to Brian Layman for a head’s up on recent Barr developments.

For the first time since each became their respective party’s (presumptive) candidate, Senators John McCain and Barack Obama stood on the same stage Saturday evening, at the Saddleback Civil Forum on Presidency. The setting was the megachurch of evangelical pastor, Rick Warren, and the audience was made up of born-again Christians.
Each candidate was asked the same questions, separately (Senator Obama answered first - while Senator McCain waited in a sound-proof area). The questions touched on the personal faith, beliefs and shortcomings of each candidate - and the candidates’ moral view of America.
On the question of personal moral failures, Barack Obama cited his teenage use of drugs and alcohol, stemming from being “so obsessed with me and why I might be dissatisfied”; asked the same question, Senator McCain answered “my greatest moral failing, and I have been a very imperfect person, is the failure of my first marriage.”
The candidates also answered questions regarding: abortion; same sex marriage; and, Supreme Court nominations.
According to Mark Halperin (Time.com), both candidates “aced” the interview/forum.
You can watch the interviews on CNN.com and the broadcast will re-air tonight (8/17) on CNN at 8pm (EST).
