What Do Business Owners Think About Politics? Michael Dougherty
Michael Dougherty is the owner of Wicked Java Design Studio, a multi media design studio out of Baltimore, Maryland, serving clients in a wide range of industries from non-profit and small business to major corporate clients. He gave us a few minutes to talk about how politics affects his business:
1. What is the biggest issue facing your small business today? How could politicians help you?
The biggest issue facing me now is taxes, both for my customers and for my own business. The best thing a politician can help start up business’ is a one year moratorium on business taxes as it’s in that first year that most small business owners are struggling to find their legs. That will, realistically, never happen, but it would help a great deal for those individuals in their first year where all of their money, their personal time and their future are tied into the success or failure of their business venture.
2. What presidential candidate would be the best choice for America? For small business owners? Why?
I’m not 100% sure, to be very honest. From what I’ve seen there’s very few candidates with clearly defined plans for small business owners. The focus I’ve seen is who’s slinging political dirt at whom. As a small business owner, I really don’t want to hear about who said what and who’s potentially sleeping with whom. None of that makes an impact on my business. I am concerned that the companies who can afford to “support” a candidate are the ones who aren’t in the daily trenches like the small business owner.
3. How involved are you with politics?
I try to keep a pulse on the political world, because I firmly believe you get the government you deserver. Meaning that if you don’t pay attention and you don’t participate you get the candidate that’s going to make you wake up and wonder why you didn’t. So I vote, I try to keep myself informed with as much fact based information as possible and I try to honestly make opinions based on that information.
